ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM “PAOLO GIOVIO” AND HISTORY MUSEUM “G. GARIBALDI”
The Civic Archaeological Museum is located in Palazzo Giovio. It exhibits prehistoric findings, an Egyptian collection including a mummy and an extensive collection from the roman period, which testify the existence of the Romans in the Como area. Inside the walls of Palazzo Olginati there is the Risorgimento Museum, with documents, weapons, uniforms and many other relics connected to Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Wars of Independence.
THE ART GALLERY AT PALAZZO VOLPI
The town art gallery is housed in a 17th century building. It displays territorial art evidence: from Romanesque and pre-Romanesque sculptures to medieval frescoes coming from the lost monastery of Santa Margherita. The section dedicated to Como’s twentieth century is particularly worth a visit. It contains works by the abstract artists group “Gruppo Como” together with a collection of futurist architect Antonio Sant’Elia’s drawings and works by the multivalent artistIco Parisi.
PINACOTECA CIVICA
Nel 1989, in seguito a riassetti organizzativi del Museo Civico, nei locali seicenteschi di Palazzo Volpi hanno trovato spazio le collezioni pittoriche e scultoree patrimonio della città. Negli anni la collezione si è costituita anche grazie a numerosi lasciti privati e alle testimonianze provenienti dall’archivio storico dell’ufficio tecnico del Comune di Como relative all’edificazione delle strutture razionaliste in città durante l’epoca fascista.
VOLTA TEMPLE
This small neoclassical temple built in 1927 to house the great scientist Alessandro Volta’s relics contains interesting historical findings connected to the scientist’s personal and professional life, such as his instruments and inventions among which is the fi rst version of the electric torch.
SACRED TEMPLE OF WATER SPORTS
Inside a modern sanctuary in a panoramic position along the street that leads towards Brunate, Como’s nautical sportsmen relics are exhibited. There is also a single collection of cribs made of marine material.
